We're still figuring out the best communication tech.

Programming

  • Github Codespaces (free tier gives 4 hours/day) and tmate via apt install tmate
    • Setting editor if vim is preferred
git config --global core.editor "vim"
export GIT_EDITOR=vim

Mockups/Wireframes

Time Tracking

Video Calling and Screen Sharing

  • Google Meet: limited to 1 hour free, but can make new meetings
    • In July 2024, Google One added benefits to Google Meet
      • "Maximum call length - Users can have one-on-one calls and group calls for up to 24 hours."
      • "Live stream Meet calls to YouTube - You can use Google Meet to Live stream a meeting publicly to YouTube."
  • Jitsi: New to us. Good backup provider.
  • Signal: Haven't tried on desktop together
  • Skype: haven't tried together

Chat

  • Google Meet chat: works okay, but disappears too frequently
  • Gitter.im: Common for open source. Encrypted.
  • Discord: Haven't tried together
  • Slack: We've generally used it at work, but the free plan has continuously gotten worse. (In 2024: 90-day content visibility and deletion after a year.)

Notice of Slack’s new content deletion policy for free workspaces

Free workspace content older than one year will be deleted

We wanted to let you know about a change in policy for free workspaces.
