generalized refactoring ticket for views code

a lot of features are added recently, it's now time to cleanup the views, dataframes, and graph code especially to remove a lot of repetition and create a lot of smaller functions

we could also look at reversing URL patterns in some places and cleaning up template/javascript usage, which is spread out at the moment.
