Head to Head vs Points

Is this done baseball style where you track statistical categories?
is this football style where each player accrues points?

I need to familiarize myself with how fantasy leagues work, but isn't it often the case that in a manager-v-manager setup, one manager would compete against another, and the winner for the week would add that win to their record? Then we start the points over again from scratch with another manager-v-manager and another week.

Or is that not how it works?

You're describing head to head. Another way to do it is to simply assign points to certain things, and at the end of the season the manager with the most points wins. This sort of league is a little lower stress to play, because you don't have to think about what your lineup has VS what your opponent's lineup has, and try to play the right players to beat them specifically, if that makes sense. Both ESPN and Yahoo (the major fantasy sports software providers) support both models.
