Problem accessing contacts?

I've configured cmdg several times with Gmail but I cannot get the contacts to work. Only two completely random contacts show up. I've added the People API and also the Contacts API, to no avail.

I vaguely remember getting partial contacts, but that was a couple of years ago.

Two possibilities:

1. Google could have several APIs for contacts. Doesn't seem out of character.
2. cmdg could be using the right API wrong.
