[v4.0+loader-1.21.10] No mod connection between Server and Client. Server is behind Velocity Network

What happened?

Install the mod on an Fabric Server that is using Velocity. Start it up. Mod will initializie in server consol as running and working. Clients will still see the "This feature requires both you and the server, to have the latest (or better, the same) version of this mod installed." and the server connection button in the button is still disabled.

If I remember correctly, this isn't the first time my mod has issues with Velocity, unsure if #103 is related.

I'll try to look into it if I get the time to, as I am currently primarily 'hyper-focused' on developing the v5.0 rewrite that's in progress.
Thanks a lot for the bug report regardless, I'll keep this in mind once I get to rewriting networking-related features.

Thanks for the reply. I just tried installing crossatitch on the 1.20.10 fabric server. From the cross-stitch release, there seems no version specific for 1.21.10 but the latest cross-stitch version seems to start without errors in the logs of my server. Sadly cross stitch does not seem to fix the connection of better stats between the client and server, the icon is still gray without blue tip. Maybe it's because cross stitch needs an update or smth changed from your mod or on cross stitch's side because the mc version mentioned in #103 was 1.20.1

Given I never used Velocity, finding the root cause may be a challenge for me. Although I will bring up how the server connection feature works, as I believe something about Velocity interferes with it. This might help find the root cause in the future.

So Minecraft has this type of networking packet the game's code calls "custom payload". The Minecraft Wiki calls it "plugin channels" and Bukkit calls it "plugin messaging channel". I will refer to it as "custom payloads", as that is what the game's code calls it.

This mod uses custom payloads to exchange information between a dedicated server and a client (player).
When a player with this mod joins a dedicated server that also has this mod, the following happens:

1. S2C -> this mod from the server sends the client a custom payload saying "i have better statistics screen installed"
2. C2S -> the client acknowledges the S2C message, and sends the server a message saying "i also have that mod installed"
3. the communication is established and the client's GUI shows the blue cell-tower icon

The client showing a grayed-out cell-tower icon means the 1st step (the S2C one) failed, causing the client to think the server doesn't have the mod installed. For some reason Velocity is preventing custom payload packets from being exchanged. Personally I feel that this is not an issue on my end, but rather Velocity's. Why Velocity behaves like that I do not know.

I decided to check out Velocity just now and I found that its configuration file has one interesting setting;

# Enables BungeeCord plugin messaging channel support on Velocity.
bungee-plugin-message-channel = true

I do not know if this can cause the issue, but it is worth a shot.

After doing some searching on the internet, I also found the following projects that may be of help;

• CrossStitch
• FabricProxy-Lite
• ProxyCompatibleForge

Although I would be lying if I said I know anything about what those do and what they're for.
